Mazzy Star, "Give You My Lovin'"

Happy Friday!

Felt like a little Mazzy Star today...
I just love this song, "Give You My Lovin'" because it's about how you can't control who you fall in love with, even if it's the wrong man, but knowing in your heart that you are right for each other despite what others think. I could listen to this over and over and over...

Give you my lovin seven days a week
I'll be your honey if you'll be sweet
I know I'm the only one for you
I know that you think this is not true
Man says it's rainin, rainin outside
I'll be out there in a little while
Cause you see, rain reminds me of you
And everything has turned to you
See you in places, I'm followin you
You'll be upstairs, and I'll be there to
Everywhere you go I will follow
I know it won't be the same tomorrow
People give me warnings, "Stay away from you
They say you'll hurt me, I don't think that's true
Discomfort arouses when I speak of you
As if you been sayin somethin bad about me
When I see you I wanna kiss you
But I know that ain't right so
I'd ask if I can hold you
Oh babe, I need you so bad
Oh babe, I only wanna make you glad

  1. I like that Mazzy song a lot.
A very early song of Hope's dating from early '85 or before, written when she was 18 or younger, possibly co-written with Sylvia Gomez, her creative partner in their duo "Gong Home", long before she joined Mazzy (or pre-Mazzy Opal). There's a recording around of Going Home performing "Give You My Lovfrom an April'85 concert, opening for Opal.
What a sweet melody! Hope has continued to prove she has a genius for writing emotive melodies & evocative lyrics.Plus she has the most affecting singing voice I know of, and has only improved as a singer over the years, imo!
    -A gushing Mazzy/Hope fan

  2. Hi Bobb999,
Thanks for your comment! How did you find my blog? I love the info you provided. I'll have to look into finding that version and that other song you mentioned. I love Mazzy, too. She is just so ethereal, exquisite and moving!

  3. Hi: Oh, I have a google alert for "Mazzy Star" (& another for "Hope Sandoval"),& your blog post came up among yesterday's alerts.
That Going Home version of "Give Me Your Lovin'" from '85 has been uploaded to You Tube:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gI_J2xK1UA
I hadn't heard that version for a while till today when I looked it up for you. Wow, it reminds me how appealing Hope's voice was in her youth too. She would have been 18 at the time. There are some other YT uploads findable of songs from that same Going Home show.
Also, here's a link to a downloadable audio file of the same Going Home set:
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LDUCLADU
It's a zipped .rar file, & you may know this already, but: You need to have one of those free software programs that unzips/extracts .rar files once you've downloaded them, such as 7-Zip:
    http://www.7-zip.org/

Btw, I've uploaded lots of Mazzy/Hope audio to YT. I made some fortuitous finds online just recently of 11 recordings of rare, unreleased Mazzy songs from live shows! I've now uploaded them all to YT. A mother lode of Mazzy gold nuggets!
Four of the unreleased songs are from a '90 show. The others come from a Copenhagen Mazzy concert from 2000. The Copenhagen show boasts 7 rare songs, excellent recording quality, & Hope's voice is in fine form. What more could a Mazzy fan ask for?!
In case you might want to check out my Mazzy/Hope uploads(all are songs+slide shows), here's my YT Channel:

Plus here are links to audio files of those two Mazzy shows with the 11 rare songs:
Copenhagen June 4, 2000, with 6 rare songs:

    Woody's, NYC 1990, 4 more rare songs:

I like your description of Hope: "Ethereal, exquisite, & moving". I concur. A rare talent she is. I'm happy being an "evangelist" spreading the "good news" of rare & valuable Mazzy/Hope recordings, 'cause hey, good music's meant for sharing!

  4. Thanks, Bobb999! Wow, that's a lot of great information! I am not familiar with those download sites. You should write a biography on Mazzy, you know so much about her! I checked out your Youtube site and it's great! You have a lot of neat videos on there. Thanks so much for sharing! I agree with you, good music is meant for sharing!

  5. Thanks Mar.
It's rare I get as excited about an artist's music as to seek out bootlegs & read every article findable. It's only happened 1 or 2 other times over the years. Most artists I like don't receive such thorough treatment! So I shouldn't expect other Mazzy/Hope fans to necessarily want to be as extensive collectors as I've become.

You've probably been a Mazzy Star/Hope fan much longer than me, as (regretfully) I'm a brand new fan & only just discovered them/her several months ago. How did I miss them in the '90s, not to mention the '00s?? It's probably I wasn't paying quite as much attention to new music then. Also, Mazzy Star perhaps never got as much airplay/videoplay in Canada as elsewhere due to Canada's Canadian content broadcasting rules. I hate to think Mazzy songs might have been bumped in favour of lesser Canadian '90s talents! Discovering Hope's singing & writing (along with co-writer David Roback's)late last year made for one of those rare-for-me Big Impacts, & I'm making up for lost time now! It's funny(& unfortunate too)how my favourite singer ever I only just discovered (belatedly)a few months ago! I missed out on years of enjoying Hope's singing...If only I'd known.

Five out of five of those then-new unreleased Mazzy songs the band showcased live in 2000 - all five seem to be about breakups or relationships gone wrong. Most of them have (as does "Give You My Lovin'") pretty straightforward lyrics, not as abstract or oblique as some of Hope's other songs. I'm guessing Hope wrote all or most of those songs about her then likely recent breakup with William Reid of The Jesus & Mary Chain who she lived with for some years in the '90s.

Those 2000 songs suggest kind of the flip side of your observation re. "Give You My Lovin'", that you can't control who you might fall in love with - i.e. you can't control who you fall out of love with either!
So, those 2000 songs all seem somewhat bitter, unhappy, & dark in tone, & we may never see them released on a future Mazzy album (the band keeps promising a new one's coming...), as I doubt Hope will want to resurrect bitter old songs - fine songs, mind you - about William Reid to record, especially as she's been reportedly happily with Irish boyfriend (husband?), bandmate & co-writer Colm O'Ciosoig for (10+ ?) years by now.
I always enjoy chatting with fellow Mazzy Star/Hope fans about my fave singer! Cheers.

  6. Wow, Bob999, you sure know your stuff! You are right, I have been enjoying Mazzy Star for...shall I say decades? EEEK! Well, I don't know how long, but it's been a long time, that's for sure. I love learning new things, though, and you have certainly shed some more light on her history. I like your observations about her lyrical shifts and tones. I totally love finding bootlegs too, especially acoustic versions of songs I like. There's someone so raw about them that I just love. You should set up a Mazzy Star fan website! That would be so cool--you could put up all this info and allow a forum for open discussions. I don't know much about Canadian broadcast rules but thanks for sharing that info with me. That's why I love Pandora Radio. I just enter Mazzy Star and they play a ton of her stuff, plus other artists that are similar or in the same vein as her. It's neat because I get to hear other artists that I might not have otherwise heard of before. Thanks again for your wonderful contributions to my blog--I appreciate the thoughtful and thorough discussions! Very nice!

  7. Oops....excuse my typos. I meant "there's something so raw" not "someone."
