Okay, so I am so out of it! I didn't know The Pretenders covered "Creep"! Good ol' Pandora radio keeps me in the loop--this song came on this morning and I was like, who is this covering "Creep?" This isn't the same live version that was playing this morning on Pandora, but it's the closest thing I could find. I love The Pretenders and I love the song, "Creep", so this is an interesting intersection of sounds!
(Warning: There is profanity in this song, so don't listen to it, if you don't want to hear the "F" word. It is part of the song and is purposeful, but just beware).

Mazzy Star, "I've Been Let Down"
Here's another great song by Mazzy Star, "I've Been Let Down," which describes the turmoil of being disappointed or let down by someone and not being able to leave that person. I really like the lines, "Tell me why I'm still feelin' all alone/I've been let down/And I'm still coming around." She confesses that even if you are with someone, you can still feel alone and lonely. I also like the lines, "Make me feel like I belong to you/Make me feel even if it ain't true" because they underscore the complex battle between head vs. heart; that is, trying to and wanting to belong to someone even if it isn't right or true.
"The heart wants...what the heart wants."
I've been let down
And I still comin' round
I've been put down
And i'm still comin' round for you
Comin' round for you
Take away everything that feels fine
Catch a shape in the circles of my mind
Make me feel like i belong to you
Make me feel even if it ain't true
Catch a train on a silver afternoon
A thousand miles and i'm getting there too soon
Take me there when i should be going home
Tell me why i'm still feelin' all alone
I've been let down
And i'm still coming round
I've been put down
And i'm still comin' round for you
Comin' round for you
"The heart wants...what the heart wants."
I've been let down
And I still comin' round
I've been put down
And i'm still comin' round for you
Comin' round for you
Take away everything that feels fine
Catch a shape in the circles of my mind
Make me feel like i belong to you
Make me feel even if it ain't true
Catch a train on a silver afternoon
A thousand miles and i'm getting there too soon
Take me there when i should be going home
Tell me why i'm still feelin' all alone
I've been let down
And i'm still coming round
I've been put down
And i'm still comin' round for you
Comin' round for you

Mazzy Star, "Give You My Lovin'"
Happy Friday!
Felt like a little Mazzy Star today...
I just love this song, "Give You My Lovin'" because it's about how you can't control who you fall in love with, even if it's the wrong man, but knowing in your heart that you are right for each other despite what others think. I could listen to this over and over and over...
Give you my lovin seven days a week
I'll be your honey if you'll be sweet
I know I'm the only one for you
I know that you think this is not true
Man says it's rainin, rainin outside
I'll be out there in a little while
Cause you see, rain reminds me of you
And everything has turned to you
See you in places, I'm followin you
You'll be upstairs, and I'll be there to
Everywhere you go I will follow
I know it won't be the same tomorrow
People give me warnings, "Stay away from you
They say you'll hurt me, I don't think that's true
Discomfort arouses when I speak of you
As if you been sayin somethin bad about me
When I see you I wanna kiss you
But I know that ain't right so
I'd ask if I can hold you
Oh babe, I need you so bad
Oh babe, I only wanna make you glad
Felt like a little Mazzy Star today...

The Cure, "Pictures of You"
I need some Cure today...
Here's one of my favorite songs by The Cure, "Pictures of You." I love this song, it's so powerful and bittersweet. I love the last stanza, especially, because it just captures the anguish of lost love and the turmoil of nostalgia:
"there was nothing in the world that i ever
wanted more than to feel you deep in my heart
there was nothing in the world that i ever
wanted more than to never feel the breaking
apart all my pictures of you"
i've been looking so long at these pictures of
you that i almost believe that they're real i've
been living so long with my pictures of you that
i almost believe that the pictures are all i can
feel
remembering you standing quiet in the rain as
i ran to your heart to be near and we kissed as
the sky fell in holding you close how i always
held close in your fear remembering you
running soft through the night you were bigger
and brighter than the snow and
screamed at the make-believe screamed at the
sky and you finally found all your courage to
let it all go
remembering you fallen into my arms crying
for the death of your heart you were stone
white so delicate lost in the cold you were
always so lost in the dark remembering you
how you used to be slow drowned you were
angels so much more than everything oh hold
for the last time then slip away quietly open
my eyes but i never see anything
if only i had thought of the right words i could
have hold on to your heart if only i'd thought of
the right words i wouldn't be breaking apart all
my pictures of you
Looking So long at these pictures of you but i
never hold on to your heart looking so long for
the words to be true but always just breaking
apart my pictures of you
there was nothing in the world that i ever
wanted more than to feel you deep in my heart
there was nothing in the world that i ever

Susie Suh: "Won't You Come Again" (live)
What can I say, Pandora has done it again! I was cleaning the kitchen today and this lovely song by Susie Suh came on and I had to check who this sultry artist was! Turns out, Susie Suh is a Korean-American singer/songwriter. No wonder I was struck by her music, she cites Joni Mitchell and Beth Gibbons as some of her influences according to Wikipedia. I am so intrigued by her music that now I have to go listen to all her songs!
I found this live version of "Won't You Come Again" on Youtube and I love it even more than the album version (though both are terrific). I love the line, "I'm miss you or maybe I'm just missing who I was when when I was with you." I wish I could sing like her, she's just brilliant!
"Won't You Come Again"
What do I say on this january day
When all my thoughts have gone astray but I'm thinking 'bout you
And what do I do when I'm black and I'm blue
And I'm still loving you but I know it was meant to end
Oh
I'm missing you or maybe I'm just missing who I was when I was with you
Oh love
Oh love
Oh
Won't you come again
Take me in your arms and hold me
Make me feel new again
And how do I convey all the words that I could never say to you
When you were around
Oh
I'm missing you or maybe I'm just missing how I felt when I was with you
Oh love
Oh love
Oh
Won't you come again
Take me in your arms and dance with me
Make me feel alive again
Oh love
Oh love
Won't you come again
Take me in your arms and hold me
Make we want to laugh and sing
Make me want to love again

Pink: "I Don't Believe You"
This is a nice song from Pink, "I Don't Believe You." I just felt like a little pink today...
Lyrics:
I don't mind it
I don't mind at all
It's like you're the swing set and I'm the kid that falls
It's like the way we fight, the times I've cried, we come to blows
And every night the passion's there so it's gotta be right, right?
[Chorus:]
No I don't believe you
When you say don't come around here no more
I won't remind you
You said we wouldn't be apart
No, I don't believe you
When you say you don't need me anymore
So don't pretend
To not love me at all
I don't mind it
I still don't mind at all
It's like one of those bad dreams when you can't wake up
Looks like you've given up, you've had enough
But I want more no I won't stop
'cause I just know you'll come around... right?
No I don't believe you
When you say don't come around here no more
I won't remind you
You said we wouldn't be apart
No, I don't believe you
When you say you don't need me anymore
So don't pretend
To not love me at all
Just don't stand there and watch me fall
'cause I, 'cause I still don't mind at all
It's like the way we fight, the times I cry, we come to blows
And every night the passion's there so it's gotta be right, right?
No I don't believe you
When you say don't come around here no more
I won't remind you
You said we wouldn't be apart
No, I don't believe you
When you say you don't need me anymore
So don't pretend
To not love me at all

Emmylou Harris, "Goodbye"
It's time for some Emmylou Harris. It's just one of those mornings...
Love this song, "Goodbye." So chilling, bittersweet and beautiful.
I remember holdin' on to you
All them long and lonely nights I put you through
Somewhere in there I'm sure I made you cry
But I can't remember if we said goodbye
But I recall all of them nights down in Mexico
One place I may never go in my life again
Was I just off somewhere or just too high
But I can't remember if we said goodbye
I only miss you every now and then
Like the soft breeze blowin' up from the Caribbean
Most Novembers I break down and cry
Cause I can't remember if we said goodbye
But I recall all of them nights down in Mexico
One place I will never go in my life again
Was I just off somewhere or just too high
But I can't remember if we said goodbye
No I can't remember if we said goodbye
Goodbye goodbye

Emiliana Torrini
This is yet another reason I love, love, love Pandora radio: I just found another new artist to adore that I have never heard of before! Pandora always introduces new songs based on some of my previous artists that I inputted. Emiliana Torrini landed on the radio today and I just had to share these songs: "Birds" and "Dead Things." Emiliana Torrini has some nice strumming and musical textures with a musical quality like Jewel meets Mazzy Star meets Bjork meets Garbage at a Cardigans concert--but she still has something new and beautiful to offer. I love it!

Brandi Carlile
I was listening to Pandora Radio today while cleaning the bathroom and a song by Brandi Carlile started playing. I was struck by her unique soundscape and I was immediately hooked. I had to look up who this singer was since I had never heard of her before.
Here is "Throw It All Away," the song on Pandora that piqued my interest. Enjoy!

This is a great cover of "Be My Baby" sung by Leslie Mendleson. I love how she slowed it down and let the song breathe with a softer, almost breathless quality.

Christina Perri: "Jar of Hearts" (official music video)
Christina Perri's "Jar of Hearts" music video has finally been filmed and released! I love how she included some of the dancers from So You Think You Can Dance in her video, since that is the show that launched her career! It's so powerful to see how the dancing in the video embodies the expression and emotion in the lyrics of her song!
I'm still in love with this song! Can't get enough of it! Enjoy!

Christina Perri: "Jar of Hearts" (live)
Just came across this live version of Christina Perri's "Jar of Hearts." This is such a beautiful song, so soulful! I love how "So You Think You Can Dance" gave Christina Perri a huge break in her singing career by debuting a choreographed dance routine to her song. It's just incredible how she hit stardom overnight because of that!

Christina Perri: "Jar of Hearts"
This is for you, Lainy:
Christina Perri: "Jar of Hearts"
Christina Perri: "Jar of Hearts"
i know i can’t take one more step towards you
cause all thats waiting is regret
don’t you know i’m not your ghost anymore
you lost the love i loved the most
cause all thats waiting is regret
don’t you know i’m not your ghost anymore
you lost the love i loved the most
i learned to live, half alive
and now you want me one more time
and now you want me one more time
who do you think you are?
runnin’ ’round leaving scars
collecting a jar of hearts
tearing love apart
you’re gonna catch a cold
from the ice inside your soul
don’t come back for me
who do you think you are?
runnin’ ’round leaving scars
collecting a jar of hearts
tearing love apart
you’re gonna catch a cold
from the ice inside your soul
don’t come back for me
who do you think you are?
i hear you’re asking all around
if i am anywhere to be found
but i have grown too strong
to ever fall back in your arms
if i am anywhere to be found
but i have grown too strong
to ever fall back in your arms
ive learned to live, half alive
and now you want me one more time
and now you want me one more time
who do you think you are?
runnin’ ’round leaving scars
collecting a jar of hearts
and tearing love apart
you’re gonna catch a cold
from the ice inside your soul
don’t come back for me
who do you think you are?
runnin’ ’round leaving scars
collecting a jar of hearts
and tearing love apart
you’re gonna catch a cold
from the ice inside your soul
don’t come back for me
who do you think you are?
it took so long just to feel alright
remember how to put back the light in my eyes
i wish i had missed the first time that we kissed
cause you broke all your promises
and now you’re back
you don’t get to get me back
remember how to put back the light in my eyes
i wish i had missed the first time that we kissed
cause you broke all your promises
and now you’re back
you don’t get to get me back
who do you think you are?
running around leaving scars
collecting a jar of hearts
and tearing love apart
you’re gonna catch a cold
from the ice inside your soul
so don’t come back for me
dont come back at all
running around leaving scars
collecting a jar of hearts
and tearing love apart
you’re gonna catch a cold
from the ice inside your soul
so don’t come back for me
dont come back at all

Eastern Conference Champions, "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright"
Eastern Conference Champions' cover of Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" showed up on the last episode of Gossip Girl (season 3), and I was very surprised! Everyone seems to cover Bob Dylan songs and it just makes me wonder if these youngsters watching Gossip Girl even know the original roots of that song! In any case, it just goes to show that Bob Dylan influences and inspires so many musicians.
Here is Eastern Conference Champions's version of "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright":
